As I wrap up my motivational speaking tour for U.S. troops in Europe and the Mediterranean, I am amazed at my own realization of the importance of motivation and inspiration in my life and the lives of others. I have always believed it is important to maintain an upbeat attitude no matter what challenge one faces. However, being here has helped me to ponder a new question—What if the challenge of the job that you have chosen is the toughest in the world? The job of today’s troops is keeping mankind from extinguishing mankind. What an arduous task. Compound that with the reality that you have the world's toughest job and that the people you work for (the citizens) often don't say "thank you" because they don't know how to talk to people who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice on a daily basis. On top of that, you have to stay motivated and inspired. What a task!!
As I think about Black History Month figures through the lens of motivation and inspiration, I recognize what these individuals did for us. They motivate us to continue moving forward, showing us that challenges can be overcome and inspiring us to reach for greatness. Motivation and inspiration are different but equally important components of the lived experience. There is no such thing as too much motivation and inspiration. The troops as well as the figures we celebrate during Black History Month motivate and inspire us to be the best we can be. Let's get started and be unbashful in coming back for more motivation and inspiration when we find them waning. Mediocrity, the status quo, and failure need not be options we choose from ever again.
