When I was young if adults said "as far away as Timbuktu" or "all the way to Timbuktu" they were implying that a place was very very far away. The recent crisis in northern Mali where Islamic fundamentalists are destroying monuments in the historic city of Timbuktu has resulted in international focus and outrage that will hopefully bring Timbuktu closer to our mind and our hearts.
