IRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
The head of the Birmingham Metropolitan Southern Christian Leadership Conference is calling for protests in support of Cooper Green Mercy Hospital.

The Jefferson County Commission will be voting on Tuesday on whether or not to shut down in-patient care at the hospital. Many of the hospital's supporters are opposed to the idea.

Bishop Calvin Woods and others gathered at the steps of the Jefferson County Courthouse on Wednesday to call for the protests. Woods feels closing down the in-patient care would be a morally wrong move.

"We will not sit stand idly by while mean spirited politicians attempt to turn back the clock to an era of hatred," said Woods.

Woods is calling for massive protests against the measure. He is planning for a large protest at the courthouse steps on Monday morning at 10 a.m. On Tuesday, Woods plans to flood the commission meeting with Cooper Green supporters.

Lawmakers Pat Todd, Merika Coleman and Linda Coleman were in attendance along with Jefferson County Commissioner Sandra Little Brown.

Representative John Rogers has called for help from Jefferson County's Democratic lawmakers. Rogers has called for a special meeting to discuss plans on how to keep the hospital open.

On Wednesday afternoon, a handful of people who support the hospital protested outside of Jefferson County commissioner Jimmie Stephens' home in Bessemer. Stephens is one of three commissioners who want to end in-patient care at Cooper Green.
